A caravan successfully against toxic mining in Baja California Sur
January 28 , 2011

A caravan of about 150 vehicles, cars, buses, dump trucks and ambulances from San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos, arrived in La Paz on the morning of Friday to deliver a letter to Gov. Narciso Agundez and Congress of the State of Baja California Sur demanding action to protect our body of toxic mining practices.

The caravan was received by the Secretary of Government, Alfredo Domínguez Porras, representing the BCS governor, who has stated repeatedly in the days and months leading up strongly against the installation of mining operations using cyanide processing of minerals, or any other economic activity that threatens the health of our natural resources, environment and health of the population of Baja California Sur.

Committee Members Ecology of the State Congress also met with the caravan. Congressman Juan Hernandez Paularena announced that in response to strong public opposition to toxic mining, the state legislature made "consultative forums related to the risk of mining projects in Baja California Sur, in order to enrich the Sustainable Development Act and Environmental Protection. The lawmakers expressed their desire to leave the next legislative record of the civil society expression of Baja California Sur, which was manifested during the current administration as citizen representatives to the XII legislature. "(Tribuna de Los Cabos, 29-Jan -11)

"These forums will be held on the following dates: February 8, municipality of Los Cabos, day 9, in La Paz, 10, Comondú, 11, Loreto, and on 12 February in the town of Mulege. The information recorded in each forum, as well as expressions and proposals of citizens in each municipality, will come to enrich the Law of Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection of Baja California Sur, it is in the legislative process (a) first reading (done) in the last regular session and will be discussed in special session in February. "(Tribuna de Los Cabos, 29-Jan-11)

Throughout the Later there were exhibitions, speeches and information spaces in the Pier Kiosk in La Paz on toxic mining damage, the extent of open pit mining projects to obtain gold and the work of civil society organizations involved . Over two thousand people registered with their name and firm opposition to toxic mining in Baja California Sur. These items are added to the over fifteen thousand signatures gathered in Los Cabos and Todos Santos. During the next few weeks will continue collecting signatures, so that you can submit as many state Congress to show the broad popular support for the legislation for sustainable development and specifically to the laws that protect our state of toxic mining practices.

The following steps
The toxic mining interests are generating a lot of pressure. The company Concordia Yellow Walls broadcasts radio messages with great regularity and increasing its public relations campaign to claim to be a safe industry and get their permits. The mass media in La Paz have refused to report any opposition to mining toxic. We were even denied access to paid radio spots to advertise the caravan. The Sudcaliforniano not been reported in more than one note a month on the opposition to mining toxic. Even the successful SOS event was not recorded in its pages. Now investors and national unions are again lobbying the State Legislature to not approve the regulations on mining in Baja California Sur.

We need to also increase the pressure. How?
1. We collect more signatures against toxic mining. As Armando Sanchez says we need to get a hundred thousand signatures in the next week. Please help gather signatures. In attachment you will find ways to collect signatures and a copy of the letter to the governor.

2. It is very important attend forums of Congress and ensure that our voice is well heard. Invite your friends and neighbors to the forums and let our congress know we do not want toxic mining in Baja California Sur. The forums will be: Los Cabos, February 8, La Paz, February 9, Comondú, February 10, Loreto, February 11, and the municipality of Mulege, 12 February. Then we have the precise locations and times of the forums, communicate immediately.

May all our voices are raised by sustainable Baja California Sur, the first sustainable state in Mexico. Together we can achieve great things.
