The automotive manufacturer General Motors announced Tuesday a strategic shift to the drop in sales in the U.S. market for 4x4 and 'pick-up', high fuel consumption when rising energy prices seems irreversible.
U.S. number one car made shortly before his 100 th general meeting of shareholders, a clear reorientation of its product mix towards compact and lower fuel consumption. This decision will involve the closure of four plants dedicated to the 'trucks', ATVs built small truck chassis.
GM's management says it has 'taken all necessary steps to mitigate the impact on employees' as a result of these closures, with shipments of personal and voluntary departures as part of a plan already underway. GM
expected that 18 of its 19 models coming to market will 'crossover' vehicles with a 4x4 body and a sedan platform. More than 20 hybrid models that combine traditional electric motor, will be launched by 2012.
